🎙 NEW AI panel discussion series

Plus AI presentations and more!

It’s about time to go back to school!

If you’re like me, school starts back up in the next couple days.

Or maybe you’re the type that I’m really jealous of — starting back to school next week! 😂

I’m preparing for a massive shift this week:

I’m going back in the classroom. I’ll be teaching high school Spanish full-time this semester (January to May). It’s been eight years since I taught full-time. I’ll be sharing my journey — including integration of AI! — throughout the semester.

Shout out to our members for great recent contributions in the discussion boards: Kathleen Torregrossa, Terri Meier, Kris Armijo, Jeff Rerick, Kendra Carlson, Kim Brown, Adam Volk, Caleb J Wilson, Kelly Carey, Gina Nicole Macaluso, and Jeanna Bryson (wow, Jeanna, posts in five discussion boards!).

And hello to new members who introduced themselves in the “Welcome / Get to Know You” section: Gina Nicole Macaluso, Heather Klenke, Tex Isaac, Jared Matas, Pam Kaatz, Erin Bowen, Adam Volk, and Terri Meier.

PS: Remember, we have an AI for Admins community, and you have free access! You can register, access it, and interact with others here.

🎙 NEW SERIES: Swivl’s Adaptability in Education Leadership Panels

Swivl is offering a free series of panel discussions. Here’s their description:

In many of our conversations with school leaders this fall, a common sentiment emerged: not enough support exists for school leaders when it comes to helping their communities of educators navigate change.

The question: How can we help teachers navigate complexities successfully without making sure we’re confident doing so ourselves?

In the age of AI, we need to be even better than ever at embracing change and being open to new ideas and experiences.

Here, our aim is to provide the way for those in positions of educational leadership to get the support and motivation they need to embrace the adaptability needed to flourish in the modern world.

The first panel is coming up soon!

  • Title: Supporting Teachers as Thought Leaders

  • Date: Thursday, January 11, 2024

  • Time: 7pm U.S. Eastern time (4pm Pacific)

📧 Kendra Carlson’s “Frid-AI Newsletter”

One of our members, Kendra Carlson, has started a clever strategy to get teachers up to speed on AI.

(And it’s a strategy you could use, too …)

She’s sending a newsletter to her 500 teachers on Fridays.

Title: Frid-AI Newsletter (clever, huh???)

“Teachers are at so many different places with AI that it is hard to know exactly what they need,” Kendra wrote.

“(It) has hot tools to try for teachers, resources to access (like a podcast or article) and something to model with students. We have also done PD with our secondary staff on subject area specific tools and resources to use on both teacher and student facing views.

“We are working on creating academic integrity statements for teachers to be able to use as they decide how they want AI to be used/not used in their subject areas.”

🗓 This week’s discussion topic

Here’s this week’s new discussion topic (posted under AI Policies):

This week’s discussion topic was suggested by Gina Nicole Macaluso, and it’s a great one to consider!

Do you find it irresponsible for a school to not implement an AI policy and/or not provide PD for teachers about AI?

What are your viewpoints on a school (in my case, private) that has yet to discuss AI with all teachers and students?

FYI: Hit reply to this email if you want to suggest a future discussion topic!

📚 New AI resources this week

1️⃣ Opinion: Student Surveys Say ChatGPT Didn't Increase Cheating (via Government Technology): Anonymous surveys by Stanford University researchers haven't found a meaningful increase in admissions of cheating, but some educators still worry that ChatGPT could lead to creative atrophy if it does the heavy lifting.

2️⃣ Prompt Engineering Could Be the Hottest Programming Language of 2024 — Here’s Why (via Towards Data Science): Large Language Models (LLMs) will gradually become the interface between you and computer systems. As that shift happens, you’ll be able to program more with natural language.

3️⃣ 2024: The year AI gets real (via Axios): 2024 will be the year the AI industry gets serious about trying to deliver results across a wide slice of business and life, moving beyond the hype surrounding the successes of ChatGPT and chipmaker Nvidia.

I hope you enjoy these resources — and I hope they support you in your work!

Please always feel free to share what’s working for you — or how we can improve this community.
